OAKWOOD UNIVERSITY AEOLIANS Playlist

      OAKWOOD UNIVERSITY AEOLIANS  Playlist

The Aeolians of Oakwood University was originally organized in 1946 by the late Dr. Eva B. Dykes. Since then the choir has traveled widely, touching the hearts of both young and old with their inspirational singing. Later conductors include: Mrs. Joni Pierre-Louis, Mr. Harold Anthony, Dr. Jon Robertson, Dr. Alma M. Blackmon, Dr. John Dennison, and Dr. Ricky Little (a former Aeolian), Eurydice Osterman, Michele Cleveland, Lloyd Mallory and Julie Moore.

Aeolian concerts present a repertoire of choral music which ranges from the Baroque era to the twentieth century. Moreover, the Aeolians is an authoritative exponent of Negro spirituals and work songs which express the yearnings of our forefathers to be free.

Under the direction of Dr. John Dennison, the Aeolians performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, and received very flattering reviews.

Dr. Alma M. Blackmon's conducting of the Aeolians, which began in 1973, brought the group into national and international focus with the performance of over 200 concerts in the United States, Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, and Canada. Performances at the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists in Dallas, Texas (1980), led to an invitation by the Polish SDA Church in Warsaw to tour that country.

Motivated by the taste for international performances, the Aeolians competed successfully in a nationwide contest to become Friendship Ambassadors for the USA. Under the sponsorship of the Friendship Ambassadors Foundation of New York City, the choir toured Romania (1981) and Great Britain (1983).

James Cleveland And The Cleveland Singers

James Cleveland And The Cleveland Singers - Playlist

The Reverend Dr. James Edward Cleveland  Dec. 5, 1931 - Feb  9, 1991  was a gospel singer, musician, and composer.
Known as the King of Gospel music, Cleveland was a driving force behind the creation of the modern gospel sound by incorporating traditional black gospel, modern soul, pop, and jazz in arrangements for mass choirs.
Throughout his career, Cleveland appeared on hundreds of recordings, won - 4 Grammy Awards -, and received a star along the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Cleveland began singing as a boy soprano at Pilgrim Baptist Church where Thomas A. Dorsey was minister of music and Roberta Martin was pianist for the choir. He strained his vocal cords as a teenager while part of a local gospel group, leaving the distinctive gravelly voice that was his hallmark in his later years. The change in his voice led him to focus on his skills as a pianist and later as a composer and arranger. For his pioneering accomplishments and contributions, he is regarded by many to be one of the greatest gospel singers that ever lived.

James Cleveland Singers which included Odessa McCastle, Georgia White, Eugene Bryant, and Billy Preston, among others.
In 1964, Cleveland re-organized The James Cleveland Singers which included Odessa McCastle, Roger Roberts, and Gene Viale.
In 1965, Cleveland added Clyde Brown and Charles Barnett to his group which by then was traveling extensively throughout the United States and abroad into the late 1960s, performing in all major venues. This collaboration produced such recordings as "Heaven That Will Be Good Enough For Me", "Two Wings", and "The Lord Is Blessing Me Right Now".
